Bennett likens Reynolds to Broncos legend

Wayne Bennett has likened his newly appointed South Sydney Rabbitohs captain Adam Reynolds to one of the greatest players he’s ever coached, Allan Langer.

Bennett coached Langer for 13 seasons at the Brisbane Broncos from 1988-1999 and then again in 2002 where they won four premierships together. He also famously brought Langer into the Queensland Maroons team in 2001 from the Super League.

The super-coach’s comparison between Reynolds and Langer has little to do with on-field ability, however.

“He is a menace,” Bennett said of Reynolds.

“That won’t change, he’s playing in my ear already. He’s got a great sense of humour and that’s one of his strengths as well to get the balance right and not take himself too seriously.

“I don’t think [halfbacks] are much good if they can’t be a bit cheeky to be honest with you. got all those traits, they make you laugh, they take a lot of tension out of the room sometimes when you need that moment to be like that.

“There’s no greater teacher than Allan Langer in that department, he had a great influence on my career how he could intermix humour with being serious.”

Reynolds is not afraid to frequently joke around on social media at the expense of his teammates. He truly is a fan favourite among Souths fans for what he does both on and off the field.

Bennett stopped short, however, of saying that Reynolds’ ability to pester his teammates was on par with Langer’s.

“Similar personalities but not quite as bad as Alf,” Bennett said.

“When they’re like that they’re happy. If they’re not carrying on and having a bit of fun with everybody you know there’s a problem and you don’t want that.

“You kind of encourage it in its own way.”
