Cleary claims Clive Churchill Medal

Penrith Panthers and Brydens Lawyers NSW Blues halfback Nathan Cleary has been awarded the Clive Churchill Medal after steering his side home in a dramatic 14-12 NRL Grand Final victory over South Sydney at Suncorp Stadium.

In a low scoring battle that saw only four tries scored through 80 exhilarating minutes, Cleary put on a masterclass with the boot, forcing South Sydney to work the ball out of their own end for the majority of the contest.

The No.7 finished the match with three goals, three tackle breaks, 107 run metres, five forced drop outs, 17 tackles and a massive 649 kick metres.

Upon receiving the medal, Cleary praised his teammates for climbing the mountain and going one step further in 2021 after losing last year’s decider 26-20 to the Melbourne Storm.

“To our boys, we’ve worked so hard to get here and we finally did it,” Cleary said.

“We climbed Everest.”

“To everyone back in Penrith, I love all you guys.”
