Brydens Lawyers NSW Blues captain Boyd Cordner has declared that he wants Latrell Mitchell to stay at the Sydney Roosters in 2020 despite the uncertainty surrounding his immediate playing future.
Mitchell remains contracted to the Roosters for next season however reports suggest that the back-to-back premiers would be willing to give the Kangaroos star an early release if he signs with another club.
Cordner expects to line-up alongside Mitchell next year and understands the toll the last few weeks have taken on the 22-year-old.
“He’s contracted to play for us next year so I’m guessing he’ll be playing for us putting on a Roosters jersey,” Cordner said.
“For him still being a young kid and still trying to deal with the process it’s going to be hard.
“I (have) seen him the other day…he’s a young kid and I suppose it’s been talked about a lot because of his stature in the game with him already being a superstar of our game.
“For me looking in, I just know how much the club means to him, and as a team-mate and as a mate, I’ve got no issue with him and all the talk about other clubs.
“Like who wouldn’t want to have Latrell Mitchell in their team?”
Cordner headlined a contingent of current and future Blues stars attending a two-day camp at the NSWRL Centre of Excellence in preparation for the 2020 Origin series.
He insists the excitement surrounding thw squad has NSW primed for a strong future, particularly with the role Brad Fittler has played in the NSWRL pathways program.
The camp hopes to inspire the next generation of NSW players and gives them the opportunity to immerse themselves in the current Blues culture.
“I think it’s a good opportunity to get…all grades to come together from 16s and 18s and upwards, and just I suppose touch on what Freddy has started over the last couple of years,” Cordner said.
“He’s had a lot to do with the junior grades in NSW. He knows how much of an impact it has on them and its good for us boys who play in the (Origin) series to get together and see each other and go over the series that was and to do a bit of a review as well."
