Staggs ends speculation over future

Kotoni Staggs has ended speculation about his future after signing a four-year contract with Brisbane Broncos which will keep him at Red Hill until the end of 2025.

Staggs, 22, is one of the most damaging centres in the game but has not played since September last year after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament during the Broncos’ 32-16 loss to North Queensland Cowboys in the final round of the regular season.

He was not scheduled to return until Round 12 – the final round before Brydens Lawyers NSW Blues coach Brad Fittler selects his team for Game One of the Ampol State of Origin series – but has been training strongly in a positive sign he could be ahead of schedule.

“My future is here at the Broncos – I’ve always been told to chase my dream and my dream as a young kid was to be here at the Broncos, and I’m going to be here for another four years – I’m really happy,” Staggs said in a club statement.

“Reflecting back to when I was growing up as a young kid and kicking the footy around the park imagining I was in Broncos colours, to be able to make my debut and play here for three years and then to get another four years on top of that with a bunch of boys that I’ve known for a while now, I’m pretty proud of that.

“We’ve got a lot to look forward to as a club … I want to continue to grow and help the younger players out and be a leader and a mentor.

“I’m here to send a message out to the fans that I’m here to stay at the Brisbane Broncos, this is the club that I always dreamed of playing for and it’s my home.”

Staggs was at part of the Brydens Lawyers NSW Blues squad in 2019, was named Dally M Centre of the Year in 2020 and has been the top try scorer at the Broncos for the past two seasons.
